Amplified Cognition (taken from Spence, 2004)

"One of the most basic applications of information visualisation (IV) is the use of graphs to depict data. Patterns that were invisible when the data were in tabular form, often become obvious once the data has been graphed - this is an example of 'amplified cognition' and is one of the aims of IV".

Spence, H. "Information Visualisation". MSc Thesis, City University London, Sep. 2004.
