CG&A Biomedical Applications: From Data Capture to Modeling[edit]

The incredible array of image and data-capture tools available to the scientific community is dramatically changing our understanding of biological processes. For example, imaging modalities such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging let us visualize and track complex biological processes such as beating hearts. Furthermore, motion capture can help us to understand how birds and bats fly and chimps climb.
Data capture is only part of the story, however. Just as calculus helped physicists understand and model the mechanical world, computational models can help us model complex biological systems and reason and make predictions about them. Techniques and algorithms from computer graphics—from modeling to physically based animation—make this possible. This special issue is dedicated to the multidisciplinary effort needed to build, verify, and understand biological models.
Authors may assume a basic knowledge of biology, and the biology problems addressed can range from biochemistry through computational anatomy. Topics of interest include (but aren’t limited to)
- challenges in applying existing computer graphics techniques to model biological data,
- development of new computer graphics techniques and models to address a specific computational problem in biology,
- insights gained by applying a computational approach to a biological problem,
- predictions made possible using a computational model,
- best practices in moving from 3D images to computational models, and
- how to use computational models to quantify qualitative observations.

Submission Guidelines[edit]
Articles should be no more than 8,000 words, with each figure counting as 200 words. Cite only the 12 most relevant references, and consider providing technical background in sidebars for nonexpert readers. Color images are preferable and should be limited to a total of 10.
