The User Systems and Experience Research (USER) group at IBM Research - Almaden in San Jose, California is currently accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist.

The USER group focuses on understanding and improving how people interact with technology (Human-Computer Interaction), and how people interact with people through the use of technology (Human-Computer-Human Interaction). We analyze existing practices, build novel, interactive technologies and systems, and study their impact on real users, often in the field. Our cross-disciplinary team is comprised of researchers and software engineers with backgrounds in computer science, psychology, social science, design, and user experience.

USER group’s current research focuses are two-fold: 1. people modeling, which involves using people-generated digital footprints, such as social media data, to derive a better understanding of individuals and groups and, 2. people engagement, which involves understanding the context in which people interact with information and social systems and developing novel interaction metaphors and technologies. We apply our work to a wide variety to real-world scenarios, including improving collaboration within the enterprise, enhancing precision marketing, and facilitating real-time, individualized social media engagements.

At the time of starting this position, applicants should have completed the requirements for a Ph.D. degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Information Science, Psychology, Sociology, or Communications.

We are especially interested in staffing in the following areas:

(1) Social multimedia analytics especially analytics of photos/images/videos to infer individual or group traits (e.g., attitude, leadership skills, trust, task fitness, etc).
  • Desired skills: data mining, machine learning, time series analysis, classification and feature detection of images
  • Other skills of interest: linguistic analysis, psychology research, and/or social science research
(2) Design, develop, and evaluate hyper-personalized or crowd-powered interactive systems that use personality traits to identify, discover, and match people with the right products, services, or tasks.
  • Desired skills: web-based systems development, social media analysis, HCI research
  • Other skills of interest: recommender systems research, micro-task crowdsourcing platforms (such as MTurk, CrowdFlower, etc.)
(3) Personality-based visual analytic systems: Investigate how a user’s emotional, cognitive and psychological traits, may influence the user’s visual perception and comprehension of information and how to tailor visualizations to people with different traits.
  • Desired skills: interactive visualization design, systems development, visualization toolkits, and user studies to evaluate visualization systems

Required:

Master's Degree
Basic knowledge in web-based systems development
English: Intermediate

Preferred:

At least 3 years experience in machine learning, text mining and/or data mining
At least 3 years experience in web-based systems development
At least 3 years experience in social media analysis
At least 3 years experience in interactive visualization design
At least 3 years experience in linguistic analysis
English : Fluent
