Position Overview

We seek a senior academic with a proven record in research and the ability to develop and lead a new programme in computer graphics. Your research will be central to computer graphics and you will have experience with industry collaboration.

The School is developing a computer graphics programme in conjunction with the School of Design and local industry companies including: Weta Digital, Sidhe Interactive, and Unlimited Realities. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with local companies ranging from post production to game and innovative user interface technology.

Job Description

Purpose Statement

The Professor or Associate Professor will be expected to lead the development of computer graphics within computer science at Victoria. In the medium term the intent is to establish a first-class capability in computer graphics with an active research programme including signiicant collaboration with the School of Design and local companies such as Weta Digital, Sidhe Interactive and Unlimited Realities. The Professor or Associate Professor will be expected to contribute teaching and research in computer graphics, with the academic rigour and relevance expected of the position.

Key Accountability Areas

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide leadership in teaching and research.
  • Maintain an excellent personal research profile, with publications in quality international refereed journals and conference proceedings. They may also undertake consulting, industry collaboration and the development of new products.
  • Foster collaborations with industry with a goal of developing funded collaborative research.
  • Contribute to the School’s undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in computer graphics and other areas of computer science, ensuring that teaching is informed by research and that courses are relevant and attractive to students.
  • Actively contribute to the development of the computer graphics curriculum in a manner consistent with international standards and benchmarks.

• Develop and evaluate courses to ensure their continuing validity and relevance to students and industry. • Encourage and contribute to collegiality within the Faculty and wider University. • Supervise Masters and PhD research projects and mentor undergraduate students. • Assume administrative duties relating to the effective operation of particular lecture and laboratory courses. • Contribute to the wider operation and development of the School and Faculty. • Carry out other duties as agreed with the Head of School.


Person Specification

  • Qualifications
    • A PhD or similar qualification in Computer Science or a closely related field with a strong emphasis on computer graphics.
  • Attributes and Skills
    • Demonstrated academic leadership in research and teaching.
    • Demonstrated ability to teach at all undergraduate and graduate levels and to supervise graduate research students.
    • An excellent research and publications track record.
    • Proven abilities in the development and leading of academic programmes.
    • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills.
