I think part of it is that there are a LOT of contests and ofrefs and things taking place. A lot of the time, I just ignore all of them because there are so many other people. For example, just in the past week or so, Danielle LaPorte had a contest for 7 free books (which hundreds of people entered), Seth Godin was offering a free weekend workshop for female entrepreneurs (900 applicants, 10 winners), Spezzatino did a writing contest to hire a freelance copyeditor, and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. It gets exhausting. Filling out a form is quick and easy so the sting of rejection isn't quite as bad.
