An alternative would be categories used for the InfoVis conference [1].
The top level categories are;
- Techniques: techniques or algorithms used in infovis
- Systems: real or proposed infovis systems
- Design Study: Design choices when applying infovis techniques
- Evaluation: ~of infovis visualisations, interfaces or systems
- Model: theoretical information visualization.
This needs to be filled out with sub categories;
Where would the following fit;
- InfoVis software design patterns
- Dust & Magnet
