PhD candidate in Information Visualization and personalization technologies for eLearning

The New Media in Education Laboratory at University of Lugano (Faculty of Communication Sciences) is seeking a high motivated PhD candidate for the EU-FP7 funded project GRAPPLE in the fields of Information Visualization, eLearning, and adaptive systems.

The main topic of research will be advanced and intelligent technologies for the personalization of the learning experience, with a focus on adaptive systems. A specific research goal will be related to these topics and in particular will explore the use of graphical representations that enable the learners to interact with and explore their history towards gaining insights into their learning processes.


REQUIREMENTS - Master degree in Computer Science, Information technologies or a related area. - Excellent programming skills, preferably in PHP and Java, with documented portfolio of work samples. - Experience or interest in Information Visualization, advanced visual interfaces, and adaptive systems.


DUTIES Duties will include analysis, design and programming tasks. In particular:

- Design and implementation of methods and techniques for the interactive visualization of domain and user models, and of performance data from an adaptive learning system - Extend the Open Souce Learning System Moodle (http://moodle.org) to integrate features and technologies that will be developed in the context of the project.


The PhD student will benefit from being associated with the doctoral School RED-INK: Rethinking Education in the Knowledge Society, a joint project of three leading Swiss universities in this field: the University of Lugano, the University of St. Gallen and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, over the years 2008-2010 for free (travel and lodging for the school activities are paid by the doctoral school)
