Stephen North's investigations of visualization algorithms led to the development of Graphviz, a software system (and never-ending project) for network visualization. Its emphasis is on high quality rendering that approaches the quality of hand-made drawings. The Mac edition of Graphviz (by Pixelglow) won a 2004 Apple Design Award. Recent work has been aimed at large data sets, and new tools comfortably handle hundreds of thousands of objects. Stephen also collaborated on techniques for visualizing large sets of statistical time series, space-filling diagrams of IP network space, and shape-preserving cartograms.

Stephen was the founding director of Information Visualization Research in AT&T Labs in 1999. The group created a software system, Vizgems, that performs realtime fault and performance monitoring of over 100,000 devices in production for managed services such as web hosting, WiFi, VoIP, and customer edge IP routers. Stephen received the award of AT&T Fellow in 2008. He is a program co-chair of IEEE Pacific Visualization 2010 in Taipei, and was co-chair of the IEEE Information Visualization Symposium in 2003. Stephen North received the PhD degree in computer science from Princeton University in 1986. He is a member of the ACM, a senior member of IEEE, and a member of the IEEE Computer Society.

His research interests include graph layout and visualization for spatial data mining. He is a member of the ACM, a senior member of IEEE, and a member of the IEEE Computer Society.
