Bruce McKenzie received a B.Sc. (Hons) in 1975 and a Ph.D. in 1978, both from the University of Canterbury. He joined the Department of Computer Science of the same University in 1980 and was Head of Department for seven years from 1991.

His research interests are mainly in the broad areas of compiler construction, formal language theory, compression and HCI. He published a lot of papers in the past, many of them together with Andrew Cockburn. He also evaluated Cone Trees with him.

Bruce McKenzie decided to go to work in industry in ~2004.
