Position Summary: The School of Journalism in the College of Arts, Media and Design invites applications and nominations for an open rank, tenure-line position, tenure-on-entry full or associate professor or tenure-track assistant professor for an innovative data journalist who will teach courses in both information design, as well as journalism. The college offers new graduate degrees in both data visualization and media innovation, and the successful candidate will be part of a growing team of tenure-track professors working across disciplinary lines to engage students in emerging forms of non-fiction storytelling. We seek candidates with a national or international record of excellence in the creative practice and innovative research in one or more of the following interdisciplinary areas: information design, investigative reporting, and digital storytelling. Candidates should be also be well versed in visual and social media, and have a strong interest in collaborative work in these dynamic fields of practice, and could be considered for joint positions with other academic disciplines within the College and the University. The School of Journalism has distinct advantages over a more traditional program. The Department of Art + Design has extensive offerings in art practices and design processes in a wide range of classic, contemporary and emergent media. One, the faculty conducts courses of study in a strong diversity of practices, including visual journalism, emerging and interactive media, investigative journalism, ethics in public discourse, public relations, broadcast and sports journalism. Two, we are located within a major private global research university and a leader in worldwide experiential learning, urban engagement and interdisciplinary research. Finally, we have moved with speed and agility to embrace new forms of storytelling, and students are strongly encouraged to work with peers and instructors in other disciplines across the university, including Art + Design, the College of Computer and Information Science, and Game Design, among others. Qualifications: Candidates should have a terminal degree in journalism, information design or related interdisciplinary area by the start date, and a strong professional record and/or scholarship in data journalism and design. Candidates must demonstrate a high potential to advance their field, are expected to have a broad understanding of accepted standards of good journalism practice, must be prepared to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and must have a well-developed research project that will inform and advance current trends in the field.
