Visual communication through graphical or sign languages has long been conducted among human beings of different backgrounds or cultures, and in recent decades between human and machine. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices.

Scope:
Internet of Things (IoT) is a platform and a phenomenon that allows everything to process information, communicate data, analyze context collaboratively and in the service or individuals, organizations and businesses. In the process of doing so, a large amount of data with different formats and content has to be processed efficiently, quickly and intelligently through advanced algorithms, techniques, models and tools. This new paradigm is enabled by the maturity of several different technologies, including the internet, wireless communication, cloud computing, sensors, big data analytics and machine learning algorithms.


The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 10th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI'17) will be held during 14-16 August 2017, in Bangkok, Thailand.
Conference Areas:
Each of these topic areas is expanded below but the sub-topics list is not exhaustive. Papers may address one or more of the listed sub-topics, although authors should not feel limited by them. Unlisted but related sub-topics are also acceptable, provided they fit in one of the following main topic areas:

In addition, revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press, AHCI indexed).

2. PAPER SUBMISSION
 
 
Submissions that address research and development, as well as experience reports and tool demonstrations on the above and other related topics are strongly encouraged. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers and posters. Each submitted symposium paper will be peer-reviewed by at least three International Program Committee members. All accepted papers and posters will appear in the proceedings of VINCI 2017 published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Moreover, authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to prepare revised versions of their work for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (Elsevier; SCI indexed). In addition, it is planned that revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for the subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press; AHCI indexed).
 
Research papers and experience reports of up to eight (8), short papers of up tofour (4), and tool demonstrations or posters of up to two (2) ACM double-column pages should be submitted through easychair.org. The review process will be single-blind. We appreciate the submission of videos or other supplemental material. Please provide a URL at the end of the submitted paper to enable the reviewers the download of your additional material. Learning through Overcoming Inconsistencies, Prof. Du Zhang,
(Macau University of Science and Technology)
 
 
Du Zhang is Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology, Macau University of Science and Technology, Macau, China. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees, both in computer science, from the University of Illinois and Nanjing University, China, respectively. Previously he was a Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department at California State University, Sacramento. He has research affiliations with numerous universities in the USA, UK, Hong Kong, China, Czech Republic, and Mexico.
 
Professor Zhang's current research interests include machine learning (inconsistency-induced perpetual learning), knowledge-based systems, big data analytics, and software engineering. He has over 200 publications in these and other areas. He has served in various roles on numerous international conferences, and is editor or editorial board member for several journals in the areas of artificial intelligence, software engineering and knowledge engineering, big data, and applied mathematics. Professor Zhang is a senior member of both the IEEE and ACM, a board member of the Society of Information Reuse and Integration, and a member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon and Phi Beta Delta.

(University of Aizu, Japan)
 
Michael Cohen received an Sc.B. in EE from Brown University (Providence, Rhode Island) in 1980, M.S. in CS from the University of Washington (Seattle) in 1988, and Ph.D. in EECS from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) in 1991. He has worked at the Air Force Geophysics Lab (Hanscom Field, Massachusetts), Weizmann Institute (Rehovot; Israel), Teradyne (Boston, Massachusetts), BBN (Cambridge, Massachusetts and Stuttgart; Germany), Bellcore (Morristown and Red Bank, New Jersey), the Human Interface Technology Lab (Seattle, Washington), and the Audio Media Research Group at the NTT Human Interface Lab (Musashino and Yokosuka; Japan). He is currently a Professor in the Human Interface Lab at the University of Aizu (Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan).
 
He has research interests in user interfaces for telecommunications, groupware and CSCW (computer-supported collaborative work), stereotelephonics, digital typography and electronic publishing, hypermedia, ubicomp (ubiquitous computing) and virtual reality. Besides teaching various undergraduate courses including Information Theory, he co-teaches graduate-level courses in Acoustic Modeling, and Computer Music.
 
He is a member of the ACM, IEEE, 3D-Forum, TUG (TeX Users Group), and VRSJ (Virtual Reality Society of Japan).
 
 
 
4. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS
 
 
VINCI'17 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include:
 
The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved.
 
Contact information of the workshop chairs, their competence in the proposed topic(s) and previous experience in chairing scientific events.
 
A tentative list of program committee members.
 
Intended length (half or full day) and a draft of the Call for Papers.
 
It is expected that the workshop organizers will setup an own workshop web page as soon as the workshop proposal has been accepted.
 
Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, or practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audience to the tutorial.
 
It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. Detailed information on the submission of workshop and tutorial proposals can be found at the end of this page.
 
 
5. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS
 
 
We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI'17. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area.
 
Papers submitted to special sessions should be done through the VINCI'17 EasyChair submission system. The paper types are identical to those of regular submissions. It is the responsibility of the special session organizers to make sure that papers submitted to their special session clearly indicate the name of the special session the paper belongs to. All papers submitted to special sessions will be subject to the same peer-review procedure as the regular papers (however chaired by the special session organizers) and will appear in the VINCI'17 conference proceedings as well. The symposium chairs reserve the right to move accepted papers for a special session into a regular session in case the special session has finally less than four papers. In this case, the special session will be cancelled.
