Post-Doctoral Fellowship (re-post)

Department of Computer Science
Memorial University
St. John's, NL A1B 3X5
Canada

The Project

For a project titled Geo-Visual Analytics of Capture Fisheries Statistical Data, we are seeking a post-doctoral fellow with a background and research interest in one or more of the following areas:

  • machine learning
  • statistical data processing
  • information visualization
  • geo-visualization
  • visual analytics
  • human-computer interaction

The goal of the project is to design and develop a geo-visual analytics toolkit for the exploration of capture fisheries statistical data. Geo-visual analytics is an exciting new research discipline that deals with developing and studying interactive visual representations of geo-coded information, with the purpose of supporting complex decision making. Due to the size and complexity of the data sets, data mining and machine learning techniques are employed to automatically condense and reveal interesting patterns or relationships within the data. The visual and interactive representations empower the user to "see" these features in the data, and support them in taking an active role in the exploration and knowledge-discovery process.

The successful candidate will be actively involved in every aspect of this research project, from the preliminary investigations, systems research, systems development & study, to its dissemination. Our research team includes four faculty members at Memorial University, and a number of graduate students in Computer Science and Geography, as well as industry partners.

Applying for the Position

The position is available immediately and will be offered on a one-year term, with the option to renew for two additional years. It is located on the St. John's Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland (Canada), in the department of Computer Science.

Applications of qualified candidates should be sent by email to Dr. Orland Hoeber (hoeber <AT> mun.ca) by July 31, 2009. Please include a C.V., statement of research interests, and names and email contact information of two referees.
