Research & Development Positions[edit]

Location: Northport NY and Albany NY

Deadline: March 1, 2009

Applied Visions, Inc. is a small software engineering research and development firm serving commercial and government clients. Our Secure Decisions Division provides software solutions to help information security professionals explore and analyze massive amounts of critical data to make better decisions. Our customers and collaborators include Air Force Research Lab, Naval Research Lab, DARPA, Department of Homeland Security, US-CERT, and the intelligence community. We are looking for candidates who are willing to work in a small collaborative environment, show flexibility in work assignments, and demonstrate high levels of independence and responsibility.

Openings are available at both of our offices: our headquarters in Northport NY (on the north shore of Long Island, about 45 miles from New York City), and Albany NY. Candidates will be expected to travel on company business and must be willing to apply for a Top Secret security clearance. You must be a U.S. citizen to work here.


Position: Information Visualization Researcher[edit]

We are looking for professionals with education and experience in information visualization and human-computer interaction. Some knowledge of information security is also desirable. Candidates must have good communication and writing skills, and experience in information visualization design, implementation, and testing.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Designing novel visualization and interaction techniques to solve the challenges of information security and other domains;
  • Implementing prototype software to demonstrate visualization techniques;
  • Soliciting requirements and use cases from users, and communicating those to the software development team;
  • Preparing for and executing the evaluation and usability testing of the information visualization software that we develop;
  • Serving as the subject matter expert on information visualization to projects and proposals;
  • Supporting the preparation of proposals to obtain research and development funding;
  • Managing projects, including serving as Principal Investigator on contracts; and
  • Preparing papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals or conferences.

Qualifications include:

  • Masters or Ph.D. in computer science, information systems, or a related field;
  • Excellent leadership, problem solving, and communication skills;
  • Experience in software design and/or development; and
  • Prior publication in peer-reviewed conferences and journals


Position: Systems Analyst, Information Systems or Information Security[edit]

We seek professionals with education and experience in the analysis of domains such as information security or critical infrastructure protection, in support of the development of information systems software. Candidates must have good communication and writing skills, demonstrated research skills, and experience in analysis of complex problems related to information systems.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Soliciting requirements and use cases from users, and communicating those to the software development team;
  • Preparing for and executing the evaluation and usability testing of software to aid the situational awareness of network administrators and information security practitioners;
  • Developing methods for training IT professionals in new software tools that we develop;
  • Researching methods for assigning value to information content, mapping machines to missions, and other data mining and analysis topics;
  • Researching methods for analyzing the dependencies between network devices, users, and business processes;
  • Supporting the preparation of proposals to obtain research and development funding; and
  • Preparing papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals or conferences.

Qualifications include:

  • Masters degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field;
  • Experience in conducting research;
  • Prior publication in peer-reviewed conferences and journals; and
  • Excellent leadership, problem solving and communication skills.
