Fernanda Viegas is a Ph.D. candidate in the Sociable Media Group at the MIT Media Lab. Her research focuses on the visualization of the traces people leave as they interact online. Some of her projects explore email archives, newsgroup conversations, and the editing history of wiki pages. She is particularly fascinated by the stories that these social archives tell us and the patterns they contain.

Martin Wattenberg is a researcher at IBM whose work focuses on visual explorations of culturally significant data. His algorithmic approach is informed by his background in mathematics. Wattenberg is equally known for his scientific and applied work in the field of information visualization, and for his information-based digital artwork. In his work, the mathematical underpinnings of a computer program are not simply tools used to create art; they are the core of the artworks themselves. Technology Review recently named him "one of the world's 100 top young innovators."

Wattenberg's artwork has been exhibited at The London Institure of Contemporary Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Ars Electronica, The New Museum, and at galleries and festivals internationally. Commissions include The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Smithsonian National Museum of American History, The NASA Art Program, Ars Electronica, New Radio and Performing Arts, and The Walker Art Center.

His projects have been honored by the Columbia Journalism School Online Journalism Award and the National Magazine Award (with SmartMoney.com), the ID Magazine Interactive Media Design Review, the IDSA Industrial Design Excellence Award, and the Graz Biennale of Media and Architecture (with Marek Walczak).

Wattenberg received his Ph.D. in mathematics from U.C. Berkeley, M.S. from Stanford University, and A.B. from Brown University.

Furthermore, EDA can be used to support the selection of appropriate statistical tools as well as to provide a basis for statistical inference and further data collection.

Essential to EDA are graphical tools like box plots, stem–and–leaf plots, scatter plots, or timelines.

Definition
A primitive example of a glyph is an arrow whose visual attributes length, width, angle, and color might be used to encode four different data attributes in a single graphical object.

The most prominent example for glyphs are Chernoff Faces [Chernoff, 1973], where the different parts of a conceptualized human face (mouth, nose, head, eyes, eyebrows, etc.) encode different dimensions of an n-dimensional data set.

Advantages of glyph representations are foremost their easy learnability, long remembering periods, and the possibility to represent value restrictions visually, especially when multiple attributes are involved.

VIE-VISU
An interactive glyph technique that is used for time oriented analysis of electronic patient records is VIE-VISU [Horn et al., 1998]. The motivation for their development was the fact that paper-based analysis of patient records is very hard to conduct because many parameters are involved and an overall assessment of the patient's situation is hard to maintain. The glyph display helps to combine different measurements, maintaining their relationships, show their development over time, and make specific, possibly life threatening situations, easy to spot. The used glyph basically consists of three parts that represent circulation, respiration, and fluid balance parameters (top to bottom). All in all, 15 different patient parameters are combined to form this glyph. Each glyph represents a one hour period and 24 glyphs are combined in a single screen

A character is a textual unit, whereas a glyph is a graphical unit. Sometimes several characters or only parts of one glyph — consider ligatures as an example.

Ken Brodli is is Professor of Visualization in the School of Computing at the University of Leeds.

The Visualization Research Group at Leeds is looking at three particular areas where our understanding can be enhanced through a visual representation:

* Visualization Systems - where we are looking to extend existing visualization systems in four key directions:
** collaboration - to allow users at different locations to work together on a visualization
** computational steering and problem-solving environments - to link simulation and visualization, for example to provide engineering design environments
** Web-based visualization - to allow the specification, creation and delivery of visualizations using Web technologies
** Grid-enabled visualization - to allow visualization systems to be integrated into Grid computing environments
* Visualization Algorithms - where we are looking at increasing the robustness of algorithms in a number of ways:
** incorporating constraints - to ensure visualizations adhere to physical properties, such as positivity
** increasing accuracy - to provide improved algorithms in areas such as isosurfacing
** understanding errors - to provide indications of errors incurred in creating a visualization and where we are looking to develop new approaches for:
** high dimensional datasets - to enable visualization of functions of many variables.
* Virtual Environments - where we are focussing on medical applications:
** Web-based surgical training - to provide simple, yet realistic, surgical training simulators using Web technology
** deformable modelling - to provide realistic yet computationally efficient simulations of soft object behaviour
** volume rendering - to support surgeons in the operating theatre by providing 3D visualizations of medical image data

He has been working in the field of HCI for more than 30 years. In the 1970's he worked on the MINNIE interactive CACD system with Bob Spence, pioneering a range of interaction and information visualisation techniques, including dynamic exploration and percent done indicators. Also with Bob Spence he devised the bifocal display (1980) and the Lean Cuisine notation for menu description (1988). More recently his research has focussed on systems supporting collaborative work, and on techniques for large screen interaction.
