Your workplace
The advertised position will be placed in the ISOVIS group, led by Professor Andreas Kerren. The research group mainly focuses on the explorative analysis and visualization of typically large and complex information spaces, for example in biochemistry, humanities, or software engineering. Our vision is to attack the big data challenge by a combination of human-centered data analysis and interactive visualization for decision making. These research topics are highly relevant for academia and economy as both science and industry make increasing use of data-intensive technologies.

Your work assignments
The postdoc fellow will conduct research within the fields of information visualization and visual analytics in close collaboration with ISOVIS members, other research groups of the department, and domain experts within the Linnaeus University Centre for Data Intensive Sciences and Applications (DISA). The work duties include the whole research cycle, i.e., from literature reviews and the identification of research challenges, throughout the implementation of visualization tools and performing user studies, to the reporting of the results in publications.

In this context, the postdoc fellow is expected to regularly present intermediate/final research results at international conferences/workshops and publish them in highly-ranked conference proceedings and journals in the areas of information visualization, visual analytics, but possibly also in the areas of the domain experts.

Within the DISA environment, large and complex data sets from various domain areas need to be efficiently visualized to transform data into useful information and new knowledge by the development of visualization principles, techniques and visual analytics tools, including provisioning suitable backend infrastructures to serve web-based, interactive visualizations.

To the extent of maximal 20% of the working time, the postdoc fellow will be involved in teaching activities at different levels (incl. supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis projects). The teaching tasks relate to subjects of the ISOVIS research group, as well as to more general courses in computer science and software development.

Your qualifications
Eligible to be employed are those who have completed a doctoral degree in Computer Science or an equivalent degree. The doctorate shall have been obtained no longer than three years before the expiration date of the application. Eligibility for this position also requires that the doctoral thesis has a focus on information visualization, visual analytics, or closely related fields.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.

Excellent knowledge in the focused research areas of information visualization and visual analytics is a strong advantage. Good programming skills (Java, JavaScript, HTML5, WebGL/OpenGL) and a solid training in mathematics, data mining, or machine learning are highly preferred. Experience of teaching at undergraduate and/or advanced levels in the field is desirable. Documented expertise and working experience within at least one of the following research and educational areas is a great advantage:

* Visual analytics of Big Data
* Multidimensional visualization techniques in combination with machine learning and/or data mining techniques
* Visual text/network/software analytics
* Explainable AI/ML using visualization
* Experiences in specific application domains and their visualization needs, such as in digital humanities, social sciences, engineering sciences, life sciences, etc.

Teamwork experiences should also be documented in the application. Since the subject is male-dominated, we encourage female applicants. Proven track record of publication will be preferable.
Applicants will be selected through a qualitative overall assessment of the competences and skills, assessed most suitable to conduct research and to contribute to a successful development of the research environment.

placed at Linnaeus University, Department of Computer Science and Media Technology, Faculty of Technology – Växjö Campus, Sweden

* Visual text/network/software analytics
* Explainable AI/ML using visualization

* Visual text/network/software analytics
* Explainable AI/ML using visualization

Special Issue of Information Visualization on Visual Text Analytics
Submission deadline: January 31, 2023

Expected publication: September 2023

Visualizing textual information is a particularly challenging area of information visualization and visual analytics research. The types of data processing and analytic algorithms differ greatly from tabular or geospatial data, and the visualization techniques have additional constraints to consider, including the provision of context for text fragments of similar or different size and structure, depicting embeddings and high dimensional representations, and ensuring legibility of text incorporated into visualizations. The wide variation in data is accompanied by the difficulties in inferring the semantic meaning of ambiguous terms, or determining the referencing between subsequent statements.

We invite the community to submit new articles examining the challenges and successes when applying information visualization to text analytics. Articles may focus on theories, methodologies, techniques and evaluations of visual text analytics approaches and systems. Articles that specifically explore the state of research within the specific theme of this special issue are also welcome, but position papers are not in the focus of the journal. Specific topics of interest, all in context of visual text analytics, are for instance

* Text Data Sources and Diversity
* Model Explainability and Interpretability
* Evaluation and Experimental Designs
* Perceptual Issues Depicting Data with Text
* Representation and Visualization of Text and Documents
* Interaction Design in Visual Text Analytics
* Toolkits and Standards
* Text Visualization Literacy
* Generating Text to Accompany Visualizations
* Uncertainty Localization and Propagation in Text Visualization
* Support for Text Data Annotation
* Visual Analysis of Bias in Text Analytics

* Model Explainability and Interpretability
* Evaluation and Experimental Designs
* Perceptual Issues Depicting Data with Text
* Representation and Visualization of Text and Documents
* Interaction Design in Visual Text Analytics
* Toolkits and Standards
* Text Visualization Literacy
* Generating Text to Accompany Visualizations
* Uncertainty Localization and Propagation in Text Visualization
* Support for Text Data Annotation
* Visual Analysis of Bias in Text Analytics

Your workplace
The advertised position will be affiliated to the Information Visualization research unit (iVis) led by Professor Andreas Kerren. The research group mainly focuses on the explorative analysis and visualization of typically large and complex information spaces, for example in environmental research, transportation systems, social sciences, or artificial intelligence. Our vision is to attack the big data challenge by a combination of human-centered data analysis and interactive visualization for deriving meaning from the data and final decision making. Our research is highly relevant for academia and industry as both make increasing use of data-intensive technologies.

This position is part of a joint collaboration between the two largest research programs in Sweden, the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) and the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), with the ultimate goal of solving ground-breaking research questions across disciplines.

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of- systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/

The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) is a 12-year initiative that focuses on data-driven research, within fields essential for improving the people ́s lives, detecting and treating diseases, protecting biodiversity and creatingsustainability. The programme will train the next generation of life scientists and create a strong computational and data science base. ==Your work assignments==

The above-mentioned collaboration between WASP and DDLS will be performed in the context of an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Visual Analytics for Enhancing Quality and Trust in Genome-wide Expression Clustering and Annotation”, where the Systems Biology group at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Information Visualization group at Linköping University (LiU) work closely together.

There is a need for a functional genome-wide annotation of the protein-coding genes to get a deeper understanding of mammalian biology. The new data-driven strategy to be developed in the project is based on interpretable unsupervised learning (e.g., dimensionality reduction and clustering) of whole-body co-expression patterns, supported by state-of-the-art visual analytics. Interactive guiding of the clustering process will be used to explore the gene expression landscape in humans and other mammalian species, and to create a whole-body map of all protein-coding genes in all major cell types, tissues and organs. This will allow for the improvement of the quality of the classification of all protein-coding genes according to their whole-body co-expression patterns, resulting in every gene being annotated to a unique expression cluster together with other genes with a similar body-wide pattern.

The focus of this advertised Postdoc position at LiU will be on research and development of an interactive and interpretable (human-in-the-loop) clustering strategy to reach these goals. The successful candidate will develop visual analytics approaches that provide fine-grained quality analysis of the clustering processes and better interpretation/annotation of clusters.

Duties consist mainly of the following:
* Research within the fields of information visualization and visual analytics (in context of the project aims).
* Regularly present intermediate/final research results at international conferences and workshops, and publish them in top-tier conference proceedings and journals.
* Close collaboration with the other project members in our interdisciplinary research project (especially with the second Postdoc to be hired in the partner group at KTH) as well as domain experts in the life sciences.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Your qualifications
To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

Eligibility for this position also requires a PhD degree in Computer/Data Science and that the doctoral thesis has a focus on information visualization, visual analytics, or closely related fields.

Excellent knowledge in the focused research area of information visualization and visual analytics is a strong advantage. Research experiences in the visual analysis of biological data sets are a great asset as well. Good programming skills (Java, JavaScript / HTML5, WebGL/OpenGL) and a solid training in mathematics, data mining, or machine learning are highly preferred. Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous: information visualization, visual analytics, human-computer interaction, data mining, unsupervised learning (dimensionality reduction and clustering), supervised machine learning.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Teamwork experiences should also be documented in the application.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

Your work assignments
As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

The focus of this advertised PhD position and the corresponding research project will be on the web-based visualization of large and complex, multivariate networks and/or text data. Related aspects, such as network embeddings, visual analysis of multilayer networks, or explainable AI for network/text analyses, might also be studied. The PhD student will develop foundational visualization principles, techniques and visual analytics tools for analyzing heterogeneous network/text data coming from various data sources, such as social media data or data sets from specific application domains. The work will even include the development and provisioning of a suitable backend infrastructure to serve the web-based, interactive visual display with the needed original and derived data streams, and/or user data collected during the analytical process (for instance, to provide collaboration features and/or adaptivity).

Duties consist mainly of the following:
* Graduate studies in the field of information visualization/visual analytics, with a doctoral degree as the goal. The PhD thesis should be completed and defended within the official appointment duration of five years (4 years graduate studies, 1 year departmental tasks).
* Research in the field information visualization/visual analytics.
* Regularly present intermediate research results at international conferences and workshops, and publish them in conference proceedings and journals.
* Close collaboration with the other group members in an interdisciplinary research environment as well as with domain experts.
* At most 20% of the total working time will be dedicated to teaching and other administrative departmental tasks

Note that a PhD position in Sweden is a salaried employment with the right to social benefits and paid vacations.

Your workplace
The advertised position will be placed in the iVis group led by Professor Andreas Kerren. Our research vision is to attack the big data challenge by a combination of human-centered data analysis and interactive visualization for decision making. These research topics are highly relevant for academia and economy as both science and industry make increasing use of data-intensive technologies.

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in the area of computer science, media technology, computer engineering, information technology or closely related topic or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

The work of a PhD student is driven by engagement, curiosity, creativity, problem solving, the ability to work independently, but also the ability and willingness to collaborate with fellow colleagues from different backgrounds. Required qualifications are:

* A Master’s degree in the area of computer science, media technology, computer engineering, information technology or closely related topic from a recognized university.
* A successfully finished Master’s thesis performed in a field related to Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Human-Computer Interaction, or Data Science.
* Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written.

Call for Papers of the 6th IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization (VISSOFT 2018)
September 24-25, 2018 - Madrid, Spain

Conference web site: http://vissoft18.etsii.urjc.es

Paper submission: http://vissoft18.etsii.urjc.es/submissions.html

Software visualization is a broad research area whose general goal is to enhance and promote the theory, realization, and evaluation of approaches to visually encode and analyze software systems, including software development practices, evolution, structure, and software runtime behavior. Software visualization is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on theories and techniques from information visualization and computer graphics and applying these in the software engineering domain.

The VISSOFT conference is principally a venue for publishing and discussing research related to software visualization. VISSOFT brings together a community of researchers from software engineering, information visualization, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization.

This year’s VISSOFT, co-held with ICSME, encourages a variety of submissions that address outstanding challenges in software systems using visualization. This includes technical papers, empirical studies, applications, case studies, and papers that present novel ideas and tools.

VISSOFT topics of interest include:

* Innovative visualization and visual analytics techniques for analysis of software engineering data. This includes source code, dependencies, repositories, developer social networks like StackOverflow and GitHub, mobile app reviews, documentation, runtime logs, and DevOps data.
* Visualization to support software development activities, including design, requirements engineering, program comprehension, software testing, and debugging.
* Interaction techniques and algorithms for software visualization
* Visualization-based techniques in software engineering education
* Integration of software visualization tools with development environments
* Empirical evaluation of software visualizations
* Industrial experience with using software visualization
* Applications of new technologies to enhance software visualization, including virtual reality, augmented reality, gamification, and machine learning.

We solicit papers that present original, unpublished research results. Papers will be rigorously reviewed by an international program committee. In addition to technical papers, VISSOFT features a New Ideas or Emerging Results (NIER) track and a Tools track. All accepted submissions will appear in the conference proceedings and the IEEE Digital Library.

Technical papers

A technical paper contribution must describe an in-depth and mature
research result relevant to software visualization. The content of a
technical paper can be at a maximum 10 pages long (including all
figures, tables, and appendices). However, the 10 page limit does not
include the bibliography, which is not limited in length.
The submission of a video (up to 5 minutes in length) to accompany the
paper is highly encouraged to show interaction possibilities. Authors
who wish to submit a video can submit the video together with their paper
if the size of the video is smaller than 50 MB, otherwise a URL to the video
should be provided.

Authors will be given the opportunity to provide a response to
reviewer requests for clarifications before a final decision is made.
After the notification, authors can also submit an artifact (tool,
data, model, etc.). The following section provides more info about it.

Important Dates:
* Abstract submission date: May 1, 2018
* Paper submission date: May 8, 2018
* Author response period: June 1 - June 5, 2018
* Notification: June 15, 2018
* Submission link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vissoft2018

Artifacts

Traditionally, technical research papers are published without
including any artifacts (such as tools, data, models, videos, etc.),
even though the artifacts may serve as crucial and detailed evidence
for the quality of the results that the associated paper offers.
Following the effort initiated at ESEC/FSE’11, authors of accepted
technical papers at VISSOFT 2018 can have their artifacts evaluated by
the program committee. Positively evaluated artifacts will be
reflected in the paper publication, presentation, and be formally
announced during the conference. A paper with an accepted
artifact will have five extra minutes of presentation which can
be used to present the artifact. The authors will also be invited
to demo the artifact during the interactive informal demo
session organized for the tool demo track.

Given the short time between the acceptance notification and the deadline to submit the artifact, we suggest the authors to start preparing it beforehand.
Finally, for more information about the artifact evaluation process visit http://www.artifact-eval.org.

Important Dates:
* Artifact submission: June 22, 2018
* Artifact notification: July 11, 2018
* Submission link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vissoft2018

NIER and Tool papers

We accept two types of paper submissions: NIER contributions (New Ideas and
Emerging Results) and Tool contributions.
The NIER contributions describe work-in-progress and preliminary
exciting results. Authors should include open questions and even
provocative hypotheses to get early feedback on their research ideas
or even support through new research collaborations. NIER papers have
to be maximum 5 pages long (including bibliography).
Tool contributions describe the design or actual utilization of
software visualization tools, with a focus on relevant tool
construction aspects or the use of the tool for gaining new insights.
Authors should be prepared to demonstrate their tool at the
conference. The submission may also contain a link to a screencast
(e.g., YouTube or Vimeo video). Tools papers have to be maximum 5 pages long
(including bibliography).

Important Dates:
* Paper submission date: June 11, 2018
* Notification: July 2, 2018
* Submission link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vissoft2018

Abstract submission date: May 1, 2018
Paper submission date: May 8, 2018
Author response period: June 1 - June 5, 2018
Notification: June 15, 2018
Submission link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vissoft2018

The authors will also be invited
to demo the artifact also during the interactive informal demo
session organized for the tool demo track.

Given the short time between the acceptance notification and the deadline to submit the artifact, we suggest the authors to start preparing it beforehand.
