Description of the example
Explanation of the field and the data
Field Information
The field of our example is medicine, or more precicely, a blood analysis of one (or more) patients.
Charactaristics of the Field
* Different charateristics can be sampled in different blood tests.
** Increases the difficulty of creating visual represenations.
** Increates the difficulty of visualising changes in data.
* Its not easy to visualize the data in traditional ways (bars, pie charts..), because...
** The columns are all measured in different units
** the colums have different reference intervals
* The lab results are incomplete
** Some of the reference values in the first results are missing
** The column "P" is not explained, only by looking at the data can you assume that this stands for "Problem"
** Column "P" can easily be over looked
** "P" doesn't tell you if you are above or below the reference values
** There are no definitions for the abreviations used in the "untersuchungen" column
** Some rows don't list what unit the measurement is in
* The visualisation does not express if this is one or two persons data.

Description of the provided data
The data in this example shows the blood sample data of one or two patients. It also offers a reference which shows the patient if the value of a particular tuple is within normal bounds or not.

Target group analysis
Our visualisation is targeted at the actual patient and will try to help the patient understand his results without the direct help of a doctor as well as simplify the comparison of the patients data with previous results.

Charactaristics of the Target Group
* The patients generally do not understand what the results the received back actually mean as they are not doctors. They are more interested in what the result actually means rather than what is. (What is Erzthorizen?)
* The patients do not know what influences their result. When reading the data it alone is of no use to them, they are more interested in knowing the reasons for their values than the actual values themselves. (Why is my Erzthorizen so high?)
* The patient cannot perform the analysis himself, he needs a laberatory to at least analyze the blood.

Frequently used Visualisation techniques in this area
Judging from personal experience the pictures at the top are in fact a frequently used method to try to visualize the data for the patient.

Goal of own Visualisation
* Patients should be informed about their results in a way that allows them to understand the results without the direct supervision of a doctor.
* The visualisation tool should help patients see what affects their results such as sleep deprevation, bad neutrition, no fitness.
* Additionally the tool should make automatic suggestions on what a person can do to improve their future results (eat more carrots, swim for 20 minutes 3 times a week, etc)
* Tracking the changes of their results should also be simplified

Which tasks are to be solved
* visually show if a row is above or below the reference area, and by how much
* visually compare different results over time
** How have all the values changed over time
** Which rows are no longer within the reference values, which ones are
* Different sorting of rows, eg grouping by involved organs to show possible damaged organs. Sorting/filtering out the problematic rows.
Questions that can be solved using the new visualisation
* How is my heath developing over time
* What can I do to improve my cholesterol
* Which of my blood values are the worst
* Why might my eisen value be so low
In all cases however the visualisation is to state that these are automated suggestions and that they should be discussed with a docutor.

Concept
Mockup(s) / Fake Screenshot(s)
General result screen with the mouse being over a particular result
A screen shot demonstrating the historical comperison visualisation
Through which characteristics are users especially aided?
* Details on Demand (= Tooltips). By hovering the mouse over an icon or a particular result more details are shown. These details are generally hidden to reduce visual clutter.
* History comparison - By draging along a horiztonal bar one can compare ones previous results with the current result
* Values outside the reference area are highlighted by being within a "red area"
* Automatically generated general tips based on the results and the patient data
* Different sorting - By clicking on icons the patient can quickly change the way the data is sorted (ie alphabetically, worst values, organ grouping, etc)

Disadvantages
The main drawback of the new system is that it requires the patient to be able to use a computer and have one available. Of course the results can be printed out, but the full feature set is only available on a computer.

Possible future enhancements
* Automatic diet plan generation which generates an example of "healthy eating" for the selected person based on his data

* A chat program to talk about ones results with the doctor or with other patients.

Erweiterungs- bzw.
* A chat program to talk about ones results with the doctor or with other patients.

Problems with the Existing Graphic
The following problems where found when taking into account visualization prinicples (Data-Ink-Ratio, Visual Clutter, ...).

* The exact number of people are difficult to determine, especially when trying to count the human figures. Each figure is visually representing a number of people which is explained elsewhere in the diagram.
- it seems to be a head line - is highlighted while important ones (such as the one on the left) are not.
* The head line does not actually explain what the diagram is about. This important information can only be determined by looking at the actual picutres and reading the text between the picture. The diagram is therefore very difficult to read at a glance.
* Only part of the head line has a background color.
* The 'head line' is long and therefore difficult to read.

* at first glance the picture looks like two mathematical divisions.
* The human figures don't look like what they represent, they arn't symbolic for their respective representations, but they could. It would be possible to show a figure which look like an old man or woman to represent the pensionists and young figures which could look like business people to represent the working people. Other symbolic representations could be used but even these would not help a reader to understand the actual data.
* Compareable data within the years should be next to one another, in this case the blue figures are above the red figures.
* The figures are centered and so it is more difficult to compare the data.
* It would be easier to compare the data if there would be data like numbers next to the figures instead of the legend. This way the reader wouldnt have to link the numbers in the legend to the actual picture but would see at first glance which number belongs to what.
* It is not possible to find out of witch country or area the data referent.
* The blue and red figures dont have the same size.
* The two graphics 1995 and 2035 represent similar data but have different sizes.
* Different background colors are used for the graphics
* The graphics are not within cronological order, 1995 comes before 2035.
* The Legend is difficult to read, it could for example be framed.
* One could think the legend belongs to the small graphic at the bottom instead of the whole diagram

-> Due to this the diagram is very difficult to understand

Improved Graphic
Description of Changes as well as Reasoning
The following changes were made to improve the problems initially found the first diagram.
* Unneccessary data such as the 25 and 100 was removed. The exact numbers do not help the reader understand the data as this is percentage data anyway.

* Percentage numbers were added, these have more meaning than the numbers used in the initial diagram.

...) <br>müssen 35% Rentner (35% wovon? Wohnbevölkerung? ...) erhalten.

* The charts have the same size, this allows you to compare the charts easily.

Balkendiagramme (vgl. S. Few).

* The background coloring was removed as this had no purpose and increased visual clutter.
* Colors were chosen that have a different brightness to allow color blind viewing and black and white printing.

* Coherent data is now grouped by the pie charts.

* sequence the data - the data is now sequenced chronologically from left to right to meet the expectations of the people.

* rank the data - The data was ranked, the smaller key group "rentner" are at the top, while the "erwerbsfaehige" are at the bottom.

* Befund nicht vollständig
** Leere Werte im Referenzbereich (im 2. Befund teilweise vorhanden)
** Beschreibung für "P" erst durch den Zusammenhang ersichtlich
** Tabelle "P" wird leicht übersehen
** "P" beschreibt nicht, ob Wert über oder unter dem Referenzbereich liegt
** Definitionen der Abkürzungen in der Spalte "Untersuchungen" werden nicht angeführt
** Teilweise nicht angeführt, in welcher Einheit gemessen wurde
* Es kommt nicht heraus, ob die 2 Befunde für die gleiche Person erhoben wurden

* Pfff ...
* Wie ändern sich meine Werte wenn ich einen Tag lang nix esse.
* Steigt mein Cholesterinspiegel wenn ich jeden Tag 4 ml Sperma schlucke.

Aufgabenstellung

** Einzelne Blutuntersuchungen sind schwer miteinander vergleichbar.
* Schwierigkeit, alle Daten in einer herkömmlichen Art darzustellen (Balken, Kreise ..), da ...
** Viele Daten werden in unterschiedlichen Einheiten gemessen
** Alle Daten haben einen unterschiedlichen Referenzbereich
* Befund nicht vollständig
** Leere Werte im Referenzbereich (im 2. Befund teilweise vorhanden)
** Beschreibung für "P" erst durch den Zusammenhang ersichtlich
** Tabelle "P" wird leicht übersehen
** "P" beschreibt nicht, ob Wert über oder unter dem Referenzbereich liegt
** Definitionen der Abkürzungen in der Spalte "Untersuchungen" werden nicht angeführt
** Teilweise nicht angeführt, in welcher Einheit gemessen wurde
* Es kommt nicht heraus, ob die 2 Befunde für die gleiche Person erhoben wurden

Beschreibung der Daten im Datensatz
Tabelle 2 einfügen

Zielgruppenanalye
Für wen ist die Visualisierungstechnik gedacht
PatientInnen

* Pfff ...
* Wie ändern sich meine Werte wenn ich einen Tag lang nix esse.
* Steigt mein Cholesterinspiegel wenn ich jeden Tag 4 ml Sperma schlucke.
* Ev. Auflistung von Nahrungsmitteln und in welche Richtung sie vermutlich welche Werte verändern würden
* Und irgendwio steht: Fragen sie trotzdem ihren Artz oder Apotheker

Konzept
Welche Visualisierungsarten wurden eingesetzt
Visual Mapping
** z.B. Dimension "Filegröße" --> visuelles Attribut "Fläche"
Beschreibung der verwendeten Techniken / angewandten Prinzipien
* inkl. Quellenangaben (siehe z.B. VO Skriptum/Foliensatz)
Welche Interaktion dient welchem Zweck?
* Navigation
* Zooming,
* Highlighting,
* Dynamic Querying,
* Selection,
* Brushing, ...
Mockup(s) / Fake Screenshot(s)
Siehe Besonderheiten
Welche Besonderheiten gibt es?
* Details on Demand (= Tooltips)
Nachteile:
* früher Papier - heute PC - benötigt Rechner
Vorteile:
* Siehe Besonderheiten
Erweiterungs- bzw.
Problems with the Existing Graphic
The following problems where found when taking into account visualization prinicples (Data-Ink-Ratio, Visual Clutter, ...).

* The exact numbers are difficult to determine, especially when trying to count the human figures.
* Unimportant head lines are highlighted while important ones (such as the one on the left) are not.
* Only part of the head line has a background color.
* The head line is long and therefore difficult to read.
* The title is on the left side and is in vertical writing.
* In one glance the picture looks like two mathematical divisions.
* The human figures don't look like what they represent, they arn't symbolic for their respective representations.
* Compareable data within the years should be next to one another, in this case the blue figures are above the red figures.

* Unneccessary data such as the 35 and 100 was removed.
* Percentage numbers were added, these have more meaning than the numbers used in the initial diagram.
* The charts have the same size, this allows you to compare the charts easily.
* The background coloring was removed as this had no purpose and increased visual clutter.
* Colors were chosen that have a different brightness to allow color blind viewing and black and white printing.
* Coherent data is now grouped by the pie charts.
* sequence the data - the data is now sequenced chronologically from left to right to meet the expectations of Austrians.
* rank the data - The data was ranked, the important "rentner" are at the top, while the "erwerbsfaehige" are at the bottom.

* wichtige Zahlen wurden hinzugefuegt
* wichtige Daten wurden hervorgehoben
* Die Groesse der Grafiken ist nun gleich gross
* Der Hintergrund (der blaue grauslige Hintergrund wurde entfernt)

* Das ganze was oben steht. Mich freuts grad nicht das schoen hinzuschreiben.

Kritik der vorliegenden Grafik
Begründung unter Berücksichtigung der behandelten Designprinzipien (Data-Ink-Ratio, Visual Clutter, ...)

* genaue Zahlen sind nicht auslesbar (unten 24, koennten auch 26 sein ..) und die roten maxerl sind gar nicht nachzaehlbar
* wesentliches (die echte Ueberschrift) ist nicht hervorgehoben - unwesentliches (die pseudo-Ueberschrift) sticht zu weit hervor
* Ueberschrift ist uneinheitlich hinterlegt
* Ueberschrift ist nicht schnell erkennbar, nicht schnell lesbar
* Ah - da steht links von der Grafik ja auch noch was - ist das die Ueberschrift? - Ich kenn mich nicht aus
* auf den ersten Blick wirken die Grafiken wie zwei Bruchrechnungen ohne Loesung
* die grafische Darstellung der betroffenen Personengruppen ist nicht intuitiv erkennbar (Rentner koennten wie Opas aussehen, die Eerwerbstaetigen wie arbeitende Menschen
* Farbdarstellung der Maxerl unklar
* Maexchen muessen abgezaehlt werden um sie miteinander vergleichen zu koennen
* zu vergleichende Daten (blau, rot) sollten nebeneinander liegen - sind untereinander mit anderen Daten dazwischen nicht schnell vergleichbar
* Strichmaxerl sind ungleich gross
* Die zu vergleichenden Grafiken (1995, 2035) sind ungleich gross
* Die Grafiken sind uneinheitlich hellblau hinterlegt - und der hellblaue Balken ist nicht mal beschriftet
* zeitliche Abfolge vertikal unlogisch angeordnet - Jahre aufsteigend anordnen, vertikal, oder besser horizontal.
* Legende ist unleserlich aufbereitet
* Legende ist nicht gut gekennzeichnet - koennte zB umrandet sein
* Man koennte meinen, die Legende ist ein Text der zum unteren Bild gehoert
* Aufgrund des Hintergrundes des oberen Bildes sticht dieses grundlos(?) hervor

-> Fazit: Die Grafik motiviert nicht zum Lesen

Ueberarbeitung der Grafik
Redesign der Grafik
Upload und Einbindung der verbesserten Grafik ins InfoVis:Wiki

Erklaerung der vorgenommenen Verbesserungen
Was wurde verändert?
* unwichtige Daten wurden entfernt
* wichtige Zahlen wurden hinzugefuegt
* wichtige Daten wurden hervorgehoben
* Die Groesse der Grafiken ist nun gleich gross
* Der Hintergrund (der blaue grauslige Hintergrund wurde entfernt)

* Das ganze was oben steht. Mich freuts grad nicht das schoen hinzuschreiben.

Design Problems of the Table
While the original table displays valid data the data isn't presented well and so is hard to read. In particular:

*White space – There is no white space, neither between columns nor between rows.
*Grid – The whole table is paritioned with one grid format therefore tt is not easy to determine what data belongs together.
*Background/fill color – The original table only uses one background color. There is no fill color usage to highlight specific data or to group data. Tracking a row horizontally becomes difficult, one might fall into a different row.
*Percentage values - These should always use the same amount of decimal spaces. The +/- 0 also makes reading the data more difficult.
*Table terminology –
**Header - The header contains redundant information (e.g. „einfacher Wohnwert“, „PS 2007“).
**Some information should be in the table's headline, such as „PS 2007“. The whole table is about PS 2007 and repeatingly stating the same information the table becomes difficult to read.
*Orientation –
**The numbers in the lines „PS 2007“ represent quantitive values and should be placed right.
**Alignment – the 'percent' data should be aligned to the right side
**Percentage signs – These should appear on the right of the percentage value.
*Headers – It is unclear to the reader what the headers actually mean:
**„Wohnwert“ - is this the actual market value or something else?
**+/- % - is this the procentual change compared to the last year?
**„gebrauchte Eigentumswohnungen“ - is this the number of flats needed or the number of flats in use?
**What charactaristics are represented by the values „sehr gut“, „gut“?

New Table
With the problems of the initial table in mind the following table was designed:

Modifications
The following modifications where made:
*The whole table was redesigned. The table needs to be designed to fit its puprose. The following solution allows you to easily compare the seperate regions e.g. with one glance one can see that Braunau am Inn has a lower "einfach" percentage than Eferding.
*Better choice of headers – One major and many minor headers, minimal redundancy.
*Fill color – Every second line is colored, allowing you to follow a row easily.
*White space – Seperates the different regions to improve readability.
*Background color – a neutral color which can fits most color schemes.
*Regions are bold for quick finding.

Improvement
Additionally, the following improvements where made:
*A more sensible header choice.
*Improved readability due to a new formating (no longer row by row but clustered).
*More white space between data that does not belong together.
*Minimal black line usage.
*Less data per row.
*Comparable data can be found opposite/below each other.

Second Solution
An alternative solution is the table below. This table similar to the initial table but uses white space to seperate data, color to highlight postive and negative percentage changes and "bars" to allow one to easily compare the m3. Using this visualization it is for example easy to see Linz has the largest m3. This table has been included to show how the exact same data can be visualised in different forms to highlight different aspects of the data, even though the underlying data is exactly the same.

Third Solution
Finally this last solution is optimized for horizontal reading. It removes the lines and bars of the second solution and reduces color usage. While it is more difficult to now compare the vertical data, for example determining the city with the highest m3 compared to the other areas, it is now easy to compare the regions own values and to see at one glance where the values have changed positively and negatively.

Spatial analysis is the process creating visual images or models from data to help understand or interpret that data. The data has to refer to a phenomena distributed in some form of space, this could for example be data relating to physical locations on a map. It is therefore frequently used as a tool for statistical and geographical purposes, such as to create predictions or evaluating the suitability of a particular location for a purpose. [Wood, 1984]

While spatial analysis is essentially not new, as it was already used by civilisations such as the 2nd century Eygptians in early forms of world mapping, recent advances in the field of computing have empowered society to perform far more complex analysis then previously possible. This in turn has lead to an increased intrest in spatial analysis tools in the recent years. [Fotheringham et al., 2000]

Examples
A typical approach to get new information from existent data using spatial analysis is to find patterns and correlations in the data by mapping them with their geographic location. The example below illustrates this. The first illustration shows a table of earthquake data. By visualizing this data one can better understand it (see figure 2) but one can gain even more useful knowledge with further spatial analysis, for example by filtering out the smaller earthquakes and then combining the larger earthquakes (see figure 3). [Pratt, 2003]

This table has been included to show how the exact same data can be visualised in different forms to highlight different aspects of the data, even though the underlying data is exactly the same.

Quotation
Pros
* It provides an overview
* Changes in themes are easily visualizable
* Zooming to specific and/or exact period of time
* Its a time slice and not summarized with bars like in a histogram
* Contextual information
* Easy to interpret and use
* Switch particular theme labels on and off

Contras
* It is not possible to filter out exact data
* Color blind people may have problems reading the ThemeRiver if it only is presented in colors and without texture

Usage
Theme Rivers can be used for many different purposes, e.g.:
* political actions
** survival rate of soldiers in different positions
* economic actions
** water level in different countries
* military actions
* international events
* ...

3D-ThemeRiver
A ThemeRiver can be sketched as a 3D-Visualization as well. This version adds an additional variable to a 2D version. The 3D ThemeRiver preserves colors and reflects the changes of iron occurrence on the z-axis.

Description
Spatial analysis is the process creating visual images or models from data to help understand or interpret that data. The data has to refer to a phenomena distributed in some form of space, this could for example be data relating to physical locations on a map. It is therefore frequently used as a tool for statistical and geographical purposes, such as to create predictions or evaluating the suitability of a particular location for a purpose. [Wood, 1984]

It is therefore frequently used as a tool for statistical and geographical purposes, such as to create predictions or evaluating the suitability of a particular location for a purpose. [Wood, 1984]

Examples
A typical approach to get new information from existent data using spatial analysis is to find patterns and correlations in the data by mapping them with their geographic location. The example below illustrates this. The first illustration shows a table of earthquake data. By visualizing this data one can better understand it (see figure 2) but one can gain even more useful knowledge with spatial analysis, for example by filtering out the smaller earthquakes and then combining the larger earthquakes (see figure 3).
