The workshop is a follow-up of the successful workshops on
Visualization, Analytics and Spatial Decision Support at the GIScience’2006 conference,
Geovisualization of Dynamics, Movement and Change at AGILE'2008, and
GeoSpatial Visual Analytics at GIScience'2008.
GeoSpatial Visual Analytics: Focus on Time at AGILE'2010.
GeoSpatial Visual Analytics: Focus on Time at GIScience'2012.

The workshop aims at bringing together researchers from relevant fields to address research issues of geospatial visual analytics in the multidisciplinary context of GI Science.

Geospatial visual analytics has a tendency to emphasize the spatial components of geographic information. At this workshop we encourage approaches that utilize and emphasize the temporal characteristics of geographic information, consider geographic and temporal information at multiple scales, use interactive and dynamic displays in visual analytics.

The theme for the workshop is the use of GeoVisual Analytics approaches for exploring and analysing large data sets with spatial and/or temporal components. Original papers are solicited in this area with innovative papers detailing tight integration of visualization, data mining, database processing, optimization and other computational processing particularly encouraged. A special issue of CaGIS is planned as a consequence.

The workshop will give participants the chance to present ongoing and developing work without committing to a full journal paper. The journal special issue will provide selected participants with the opportunity of reporting their work in a refereed journal. Papers will be selected for consideration for the special issue according to the quality, maturity and likely impact of the work in addition to its fit with the workshop theme and established research agenda published in Space, Time, and Visual Analytics.

Example topics include, but are not limited to, the visualization and interactive analysis of large data sets representing:

individual and group movement behaviours, either in physical or virtual spaces
dynamics of geo-localised sensor data
spatio-temporal events
remotely sensed data, multi-scale and multi-temporal
large high-dimensional data sets in space and time
streams of spatio-temporal data
volunteered geographic information

as well as

models and semantics of time in geospatial visual analytics
knowledge construction and reasoning about spatial and temporal phenomena and processes
application of innovative visual analytics methods to real-life problems

Many important planning decisions in society and business depend on proper knowledge and a correct understanding of movement, be it in transportation, logistics, biology, or the life sciences. Today the widespread use of mobile phones and technologies like GPS and RFID provides an immense amount of data on location and movement. What is needed are new methods of visualization and algorithmic data analysis that are tightly integrated and complement each other to allow end-users and analysts to extract useful knowledge from these extremely large data volumes.

This is exactly the topic of this book. As the authors show, modern visual analytics techniques are ready to tackle the enormous challenges brought about by movement data, and the technology and software needed to exploit them are available today.

The authors start by illustrating the different kinds of data available to describe movement, from individual trajectories of single objects to multiple trajectories of many objects, and then proceed to detail a conceptual framework, which provides the basis for a fundamental understanding of movement data. International Cartographic Conference 2013: Pre-Conference Workshop :: Eye tracking: why, when, and how?

23 (noon)-24 (all day) August 2013 @ the Technical University in Dresden, Germany

We cordially invite you to participate in a hands-on workshop on how to efficiently and effectively
collect, analyze, and make sense of eye movement data in empirical user studies.
We will work hands-on with real eye-trackers and real data during the workshop, and discuss issues in the group.

This workshop is intended to bring together a broad mix of researchers interested in eye movement data
collection methods, ranging from the eye tracking novice who might wish to learn more about
this empirical technique, to the seasoned eye tracking expert who wishes to share
advanced analytical approaches with other like-minded empirical researchers.
Part of the program will use parallel tracks to meet the needs of both novices and experts,
and a ‘data challenge’ will form a key component of the meeting.

We thus encourage various avenues for involvement in this hands-on workshop, and call for
the following contributions:

~ Demos and tools
~ Novel analysis techniques and methods

.. Responses to our data challenges

International Cartographic Conference 2013: Pre-Conference Workshop :: Eye tracking: why, when, and how?

23 (noon)-24 (all day) August 2013 @ the Technical University in Dresden, Germany

We cordially invite you to participate in a hands-on workshop on how to efficiently and effectively
collect, analyze, and make sense of eye movement data in empirical user studies.
We will work hands-on with real eye-trackers and real data during the workshop, and discuss issues in the group.

This workshop is intended to bring together a broad mix of researchers interested in eye movement data
collection methods, ranging from the eye tracking novice who might wish to learn more about
this empirical technique, to the seasoned eye tracking expert who wishes to share
advanced analytical approaches with other like-minded empirical researchers.
Part of the program will use parallel tracks to meet the needs of both novices and experts,
and a ‘data challenge’ will form a key component of the meeting.

We thus encourage various avenues for involvement in this hands-on workshop, and call for
the following contributions:

.. Short papers involving
~ Case studies and applications
~ Work in progress reports
~ Open problems
~ Demos and tools
~ Novel analysis techniques and methods

.. Responses to our data challenges
~ the organizers provide real eye-tracking datasets, together with analytical tasks by early December 2012.

Preliminary job announcement

The Computer Science Department (Informatik III) of the University of Bonn, Germany, invites
applications for the following position
Researcher (Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in)
- visual and algorithmic analysis of movement and event data –
(PostDoctoral researcher or PhD student)

The position is funded by DFG Priority research programme on visual analytics (SPP 1335). The
position is a part of the joint research group of the University of Bonn and Fraunhofer Institute IAIS,
which focuses on visual analytics and knowledge discovery in databases. The group has an excellent
record of international projects, scientific results, and publications at prestigious conferences and in
highly reputed journals.

The candidate would elaborate and develop scalable visual and algorithmic methods for the analysis of
different types of spatiotemporal data (movement data, events, spatial time series), which will be
capable to deal with the high complexity of geographical space, time, and multidimensional attributes.
The candidate is expected to have completed a Diploma, Master degree, or (preferably) PhD in
Computer Science and proven capabilities in software engineering (Java, SQL) and algorithms.
Knowledge of Data Mining and Information Visualization is a prerequisite. Knowledge of GPU
programming, Geographical Information Systems and practical handling of spatiotemporal data is an
advantage. The candidate should be fluent in English and have good writing skills. For non-German
speakers gradual learning of the German language is required.

The position is available for an initial period of 24 months, with possible extension till 3 years.
Anticipated start date is January-April 2012. Salary is according to EG 13, TV-öD.

The theme for the workshop and this special issue of International
Journal of Geographical Information Science is the use of GeoVisual
Analytics approaches for exploring and analysing large data sets with
both spatial and temporal components. Original papers are solicited in
this area. In particular, we encourage innovative papers detailing
tight integration of visualization, data mining, database processing,
optimization and other computational processing methods.

The workshop will provide participants with the possibility to present
ongoing and developing work without committing to a full journal paper.
The journal special issue will provide participants with the
opportunity of reporting their work in a refereed journal.

Example topics include, but are not limited to, the visualization and
interactive analysis of large data sets representing:

- individual and group movement behaviours, either in physical or
virtual spaces
- dynamics of geo-localised sensor data
- spatio-temporal events
- remotely sensed data, multi-scale and multi-temporal
- large high-dimensional data sets in space and time
- streams of spatio-temporal data

as well as

- models and semantics of time in geospatial visual analytics
- knowledge construction and reasoning about spatial and temporal
phenomena and processes
- application of innovative visual analytics methods to real-life problems

Dear colleagues,

I am addressing you as experts in visualization and visual analytics.
I want to know your opinion concerning the possible impacts of visual
analytics on personal privacy.
On the one hand, results of visual analytics may affect privacy.
On the other hand, visual analytics methods might help to transform
data in such a way that privacy is protected but important patterns
still can be detected.

I am coordinating a working group on this topic within a EU-funded
coordination action MODAP - "Mobility, Data Mining, and Privacy"
http://modap.org/
The goal of the project is to raise the awareness about privacy issues
in visual analytics, shape the community, and define a research agenda.
So far, the privacy issues have been addressed mostly by data mining
and, to some extent, GIS researchers.
Please inform me about any publications / projects / people working on
privacy AND visualization.

In 2010 we are going to organize an expert workshop on this topic and
have a possibility to invite keynote speakers.
I would appreciate your candidate recommendations.

Please also leave me a note even if you did not work on privacy issues
of visualization yet but are interested in this topic.

The theme for the workshop and this special issue of International
Journal of Geographical Information Science is the use of GeoVisual
Analytics approaches for exploring and analysing large data sets with
both spatial and temporal components. Original papers are solicited in
this area. In particular, we encourage innovative papers detailing
tight integration of visualization, data mining, database processing,
optimization and other computational processing methods.

The workshop will provide participants with the possibility to present
ongoing and developing work without committing to a full journal paper.
The journal special issue will provide participants with the
opportunity of reporting their work in a refereed journal.

Example topics include, but are not limited to, the visualization and
interactive analysis of large data sets representing:

- individual and group movement behaviours, either in physical or
virtual spaces

The Computer Science Department (Informatik III) of the University of
Bonn, Germany, invites applications for the following position

Researcher (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter)
- visual and algorithmic analysis of movement and event data –

The position is part of the Knowledge Discovery and Machine Learning
research group, which focuses on the subfields of computer science
known as knowledge discovery in databases (KDD, sometimes referred to
simply as data mining) and machine learning (ML). For us, these fields
include on the one hand the automated and visually explorative
analysis of large data sets including intelligent algorithms that are
capable of extracting from the collected data hidden knowledge in
order to produce models that can be used for prediction and decision
making. On the other hand, they also include algorithms and methods
that are capable of learning from experience and adapting to their
environment or their users.

The candidate would specifically elaborate and develop scalable visual
and algorithmic methods for the analysis of spatiotemporal data, which
involve a high complexity of geographical space, time, and
multidimensional non-spatial attributes.

The candidate has completed a Diplom or Master degree in Computer
Science, Mathematics or Geoinformatics and has proven capabilities in
Software Engineering and mathematical modelling. Knowledge of Data
Mining, Information Visualization, Geographical Information Systems
and practical handling of spatiotemporal data is an advantage. The
candidate should be fluent in English and have good writing skills.
For non-German speakers learning of the German language should be
considered.

The position is available for a period of 3 years with the possibility
of extension depending on funding. Anticipated start date is early
2009. Salary is according to EG 13, TV-L.

The workshop is a follow-up to the successful workshop on
“Visualization, Analytics and Spatial Decision Support” at the
GIScience’2006 conference. The previous workshop attracted about 70
participants. Selected workshop papers, including the "Setting the
research agenda" paper, were published as a special issue of IJGIS,
v.21(8), 2007.

The workshop supported by the Commission on GeoVisualization
(http://geoanalytics.net/ica) of the International Cartographic
Association aims at bringing together researchers from relevant
fields to address research issues of geospatial visual analytics in
the multidisciplinary context of GI Science.

A big part of data that the modern society deals with has both
spatial and temporal characteristics. Visualisation of spatial and
temporal data traditionally belongs to the research area known as
geographic visualisation, or geovisualisation. Geovisual Analytics
(short for Geospatial Visual Analytics) extends geovisualisation
research by enhancing purely visual and interactive methods with new
possibilities provided by computational techniques such as data
mining, statistics, and optimisation. Potential enhancements come
also from developing methods to support analytical reasoning,
argumentation, knowledge building, and knowledge communication.

The frontier research problems in Geovisual Analytics involve the
scalability of tools and their usability. The goal of the workshop is
to present the most advanced methods and applications of geovisual
analytics, discuss problems and possible approaches to solving them,
and define appropriate directions for further research.

Major scientific topics to be addressed:

* scalability - how to make visualisation suitable for huge data sets (e.g. with the help of database technologies and data mining);
* usability – how to fit the tools to the needs, abilities and conditions of different categories of users (for example, domain experts vs. decision makers);
* effectiveness - how to ensure the effectiveness of visual analytics tools and how to test and prove it;
* innovative visually driven methods of data analysis addressing the problems of scalability, usability, and effectiveness.

Challenging applications of geovisual analytics:

* decision support: generation, evaluation and comparison of alternatives; accounting for uncertainty of decision recommendations; explanation, justification, and communication of results;
* education: enhancing learning and knowledge transfer;
* scientific research: acquiring new knowledge;
* collaboration: supporting communication, cooperative problem solving and knowledge construction.

Authors are invited to submit original research contributions or
application reports in English. The authors are requested to
stress the multidisciplinary character of their approaches and their
relevance to the theme of the workshop. We encourage submissions
presenting early stages of cutting-edge research and development,
as well as submissions from PhD students.
