INFORMATION+ 2021
Interdisciplinary practices in information design & visualization
ONLINE: 27 September - 1 October 2021
http://informationplusconference.com

Information+ is an interdisciplinary conference that brings together researchers, educators, and practitioners in information design and data visualization to discuss common questions and challenges in these rapidly changing fields. Information+ seeks to foster productive exchanges amongst the variety of people involved in the theories, practices and pedagogies of analyzing and communicating information.

Information+ will be held online between 27th September – 2nd October, 2021 at minimal cost to attendees. Building on the experiences from the previous installments of Information+ 2016 at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver and Information+ 2018 at University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, we seek to significantly broaden the base of our interdisciplinary community. We are working to design a new kind of online event for the Information+ community; it will not be a typical online conference. We will be posting regular updates about our plans for the format as they develop.

In 2020, Information+ was scheduled to be held in-person at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). Due to the risks posed by COVID-19, that event was cancelled. The 2021 online format is intended to enable the safest and most inclusive possible event, given continued uncertainties about the viability of large in-person gatherings.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Information+, an interdisciplinary conference for information design and data visualization, invites proposals from all relevant areas of professional practice, research, and pedagogy.

We welcome submissions on topics, such as but not limited to the following: algorithmic accountability, critical visualization, cultural analytics, data journalism, data studies, digital civics, digital humanities, environmental awareness, health information, historical collections, science communication, and social advocacy. All proposals must feature original work, which has not been presented previously.

Proposals should contain the following elements: a clear research question or design objective; a discussion of related work; an explanation of methods employed or design decisions undertaken; culminating findings, reflections, and contributions. There are two possible formats for proposals, both of which are appropriate for academic and practice-based work: 15-minute paper presentations and 5-minute lightning talks. Please, use EasyChair to submit your proposals by 15 May 2021 (https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=info2021#). The paper presentations and lightning talks will be pre-recorded by the authors, with live discussions among presenters and participants during the event between 27th – October 2nd. More information about the live format will be shared after contributions have been accepted.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
To foster a diversity of submissions, only one proposal is allowed by each author. In the case of multi-authored submissions, the limit is increased to two proposals per author.

Authors accepted for presentation at the conference will have an opportunity to submit articles for publication in a special issue of an open-access academic journal. Articles will be selected by a peer review process. Submission and selection for the journal will take place after the conference. Previous special issues have been published as open access with the Information Design Journal: IDJ 23.1 (https://doi.org/10.1075/idj.23.1) has articles from the 2016 conference, and IDJ 25:1 (https://doi.org/10.1075/idj.25.1) from the 2018 event.

FORMATS FOR PROPOSALS
15-minute paper presentation: Submit a long abstract (1000 words) with one descriptive figure and 3 keywords.

5-minute lightning talk: Submit a short abstract (500 words) with one descriptive figure and 3 keywords.

IMPORTANT DATES
* 15 May 2021 Deadline for submissions
* 20 July 2021 Notification of acceptance
* 30 July 2021 Confirmation by authors
* 27 Sep – 2 Oct 2021 Conference

EVALUATION CRITERIA
Each submission will be evaluated by three independent reviewers from the Program Committee. Evaluations will be based on the following criteria:

* Originality: Does the submission explore a novel, unconventional, or understudied approach to representing information?
* Impact: Is the submission of potential interest to a broader audience, beyond the author’s primary area of academic research or practice?
* Contribution: Does the submission build upon and extend current knowledge of information design and visualization through the use of empirical, critical, or theoretical methods?
Participants of this study are asked to use a visual search prototype for a time period of their choosing and fill out short questionnaires before and after using the system. The purpose of this research is to better understand performance and usability issues of information visualization supporting search on the Web. The data collected during the study will be anonymous and the questionnaires will not ask for any personal information.

I just noticed that this wiki does not have a clearly open licensing policy. Why is this wiki’s content not put under a Creative Commons-like license? How can i be sure that my contributions remain free and <strike>reproducable</strike> re-usable? Considering that many infovis projects rely on open data or information, i think it would be appropriate to employ a CC license that allows re-use and demands attribution. This would allow for new interesting uses and give contributors the security that there efforts remain free. To be honest, i am not sure if i want to contribute any longer to something which has rather obscure IP policies. On the disclaimer page it says "totally altering someone's statement around would not be allowed, because that allows for stuffing words and realities into people's mouths." Why have a wiki then? A forum might be just as good. Apart from discussion pages, i think it is the strength of a wiki to improve statements, wordings, etc. Anybody has some ideas on that? --Marian Dörk 11:15, 24 April 2008 (CEST)

Hi,
we have thought a lot about this issue and the different possible licensing terms. Finally, we decided to keep it up to the authors on what copyright they want their contributions to be applied and thus give the most freedom to the contributors. What the disclaimer states, says that the coordinators of the Wiki have the right to host the contributions on their technical platforms and make changes due to the structure of the Wiki. By default, all other authors and readers have the right to change entries in a Wiki manner (which is in practical terms the same as the CC license you are referring to). We deliberately did not want the authors to be forced to a completely open license (like the FDL of Wikipedia) because we thought that would might hinder people to put up discussions or new ideas before they published these scientifically. But the content is always free to use by others if they give attribution to the original creators. Furthermore, each author might impose other copyrights to their contributions as stated here:

{{Quotation|Make sure that you do not use copyrighted material unless legible under the terms of fair use or the original author's consent (InfoVis:Wiki Copyright). Furthermore, each author might select other types of licenses like for example creative commons by including the type of license at the bottom of the article. Every editor has to comply to the license of the original author. Please contact the [mailto:infovis@ifs.tuwien.ac.at InfoVis:Wiki team] in case of violations.<br><br>In case of using material of others, always GIVE ATTRIBUTION to the original authors! This is especially important for images.

Thanks for your quick reply. I don't share your concerns about scientists hesitating to contribute under open licensing, maybe because i don't think that researchers would be writing about their current, unpublished work, anyway. But even if they did, they should be attributed, what the CC-BY for instance demands. While it is nice to be able to set personal licenses, having everybody choose his/her personal license, probably leads to something like a licensing patchwork which seems kind of cumbersome to track in a wiki. The disclaimer page explicitly states that linking to infovis-wiki content is cool, for which there is probably no copyright policy necessary, but copying is not so cool. I would (strongly) prefer contributing to a project where the collaborative efforts and results should be reusable by anyone without having to ask every author for permission, which does not exclude the demand for proper attribution. Do i understand it correctly, that when the site goes offline, somebody else could only restart the project if every author is asked for permission? --Marian Dörk 21:51, 24 April 2008 (CEST)
Description
The Innovations in Visualization Laboratory – InnoVis – is part of the Interactions Lab at the Computer Science faculty of the University of Calgary. Dr. Sheelagh Carpendale has founded and is directing InnoVis where innovations in the area of Information Visualization and Human Computer Interaction are investigated. Active research topics in Information Visualization include the exploration of effective use of display space, and navigation, exploration, and manipulation of information spaces. In the context of Human Computer Interaction members of the lab study how to best support collaborative work on large displays. The lab is equipped with multiple large displays: a custom built wall and large tabletop display, various touch-sensitive SMART boards, and a diamond touch display. In recent years one PostDoc, several PhD and Master’s students have worked in the lab on various projects.
