==Your work assignments==

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

The focus of this advertised PhD position and the corresponding research project will be on the <b>web-based visualization of large and complex, multivariate networks and/or text data</b>. Related aspects, such as network embeddings, visual analysis of multilayer networks, or explainable AI for network/text analyses, might also be studied. The PhD student will develop foundational visualization principles, techniques and visual analytics tools for analyzing heterogeneous network/text data coming from various data sources, such as social media data or data sets from specific application domains. The work will even include the development and provisioning of a suitable backend infrastructure to serve the web-based, interactive visual display with the needed original and derived data streams, and/or user data collected during the analytical process (for instance, to provide collaboration features and/or adaptivity).

Duties consist mainly of the following:
* Graduate studies in the field of information visualization/visual analytics, with a doctoral degree as the goal. The PhD thesis should be completed and defended within the official appointment duration of five years (4 years graduate studies, 1 year departmental tasks).
* Research in the field information visualization/visual analytics.
* Regularly present intermediate research results at international conferences and workshops, and publish them in conference proceedings and journals.
* Close collaboration with the other group members in an interdisciplinary research environment as well as with domain experts.
* At most 20% of the total working time will be dedicated to teaching and other administrative departmental tasks

<i>Note that a PhD position in Sweden is a salaried employment with the right to social benefits and paid vacations.</i>

==Your workplace==

The advertised position will be placed in the [https://liu.se/en/research/ivis iVis group] led by [[Kerren, Andreas|Professor Andreas Kerren]]. The research group mainly focuses on the explorative analysis and visualization of typically large and complex information spaces, for example in the life sciences, humanities, or environmental sciences. Our research vision is to attack the big data challenge by a combination of human-centered data analysis and interactive visualization for decision making. These research topics are highly relevant for academia and economy as both science and industry make increasing use of data-intensive technologies.

==Your qualifications==

You have graduated at Master’s level in the area of computer science, media technology, computer engineering, information technology or closely related topic or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

The work of a PhD student is driven by engagement, curiosity, creativity, problem solving, the ability to work independently, but also the ability and willingness to collaborate with fellow colleagues from different backgrounds. Required qualifications are:

* A Master’s degree in the area of computer science, media technology, computer engineering, information technology or closely related topic from a recognized university.
* A successfully finished Master’s thesis performed in a field related to Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Human-Computer Interaction, or Data Science.
* Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written.

Excellent knowledge in the focused research area of visualization and visual analytics of networks and/or text is a strong advantage. Good programming skills (Java, JavaScript / HTML5, WebGL/OpenGL) and a solid training in mathematics, data mining, or machine learning are highly preferred. Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous: information visualization, visual analytics, human-computer interaction, data mining, machine learning.

==How to apply==

Interested candidates find detailed application information including terms of employment, needed documents, and contact details on the following web page<BR><BR>

== INFORMATION+ 2021 ==

=== Interdisciplinary practices in information design & visualization ===

=== ONLINE: 27 September - 1 October 2021 ===

''http://informationplusconference.com''

Information+ is an interdisciplinary conference that brings together researchers, educators, and practitioners in information design and data visualization to discuss common questions and challenges in these rapidly changing fields. Information+ seeks to foster productive exchanges amongst the variety of people involved in the theories, practices and pedagogies of analyzing and communicating information.

Information+ will be held online between 27th September – 2nd October, 2021 at minimal cost to attendees. Building on the experiences from the previous installments of Information+ 2016 at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver and Information+ 2018 at University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, we seek to significantly broaden the base of our interdisciplinary community. We are working to design a new kind of online event for the Information+ community; it will not be a typical online conference. We will be posting regular updates about our plans for the format as they develop.

In 2020, Information+ was scheduled to be held in-person at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). Due to the risks posed by COVID-19, that event was cancelled. The 2021 online format is intended to enable the safest and most inclusive possible event, given continued uncertainties about the viability of large in-person gatherings.

=== CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ===

Information+, an interdisciplinary conference for information design and data visualization, invites proposals from all relevant areas of professional practice, research, and pedagogy.

We welcome submissions on topics, such as but not limited to the following: algorithmic accountability, critical visualization, cultural analytics, data journalism, data studies, digital civics, digital humanities, environmental awareness, health information, historical collections, science communication, and social advocacy. All proposals must feature original work, which has not been presented previously.

Proposals should contain the following elements: a clear research question or design objective; a discussion of related work; an explanation of methods employed or design decisions undertaken; culminating findings, reflections, and contributions. There are two possible formats for proposals, both of which are appropriate for academic and practice-based work: 15-minute paper presentations and 5-minute lightning talks. Please, use EasyChair to submit your proposals by 15 May 2021 (https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=info2021#). The paper presentations and lightning talks will be pre-recorded by the authors, with live discussions among presenters and participants during the event between 27th – October 2nd. More information about the live format will be shared after contributions have been accepted.

==== ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ====

To foster a diversity of submissions, only one proposal is allowed by each author. In the case of multi-authored submissions, the limit is increased to two proposals per author.

Authors accepted for presentation at the conference will have an opportunity to submit articles for publication in a special issue of an open-access academic journal. Articles will be selected by a peer review process. Submission and selection for the journal will take place after the conference. Previous special issues have been published as open access with the Information Design Journal: IDJ 23.1 (https://doi.org/10.1075/idj.23.1) has articles from the 2016 conference, and IDJ 25:1 (https://doi.org/10.1075/idj.25.1) from the 2018 event.

==== FORMATS FOR PROPOSALS ====

''15-minute paper presentation'': Submit a long abstract (1000 words) with one descriptive figure and 3 keywords.

''5-minute lightning talk'': Submit a short abstract (500 words) with one descriptive figure and 3 keywords.

==== IMPORTANT DATES ====

* 15 May 2021 Deadline for submissions

==== EVALUATION CRITERIA ====

Each submission will be evaluated by three independent reviewers from the Program Committee. Evaluations will be based on the following criteria:

* Originality: Does the submission explore a novel, unconventional, or understudied approach to representing information?
* Impact: Is the submission of potential interest to a broader audience, beyond the author’s primary area of academic research or practice?
* Contribution: Does the submission build upon and extend current knowledge of information design and visualization through the use of empirical, critical, or theoretical methods?

29th International Symposium on
Graph Drawing and Network Visualization

September 14-17, 2021 - Tuebingen, Germany
https://algo.inf.uni-tuebingen.de/gd2021/

================================================================

PDF version: https://algo.inf.uni-tuebingen.de/gd2021/data/uploads/cfp-gd2021.pdf

================================================================

Graph Drawing is concerned with the geometric representation of graphs and constitutes the algorithmic core of Network Visualization. Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering.

GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 20 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest.

GD2021 will be held from September 14 to 17, 2021. A pre-conference PhD school is planned for September 13-14, 2021.

GD2021 will, like GD2020, be held virtually online, although we hope to arrange supplementary in-person activities for those who are able to travel to Tübingen (depending on numbers and any local restrictions in place at the time.) While this is disappointing, we also acknowledge the benefits of remote participation for those who are unable to travel – both presenters and attendees.

PAPERS
------

We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks. Papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track.

Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects
----------------------------------------------

This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to):
* Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms
* Geometric and topological graph theory
* Computational topology of graphs on surfaces
* Geometric network design and optimization
* Geometric computing

Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects
-----------------------------------------------------------------

This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such as the development of network visualization systems and interfaces in different application areas. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to):
* Visualization of graphs and networks in real world applications, including big data
* Engineering of network visualization algorithms and systems
* Experimental results in graph theory and algorithms
* Benchmarks and experimental studies of network visualization systems and user interfaces
* Cognitive studies on graph drawing readability and user interaction
* Interfaces and methods for interacting with graphs
Authors of applied papers will have the opportunity to show a demo of their software/system during the poster session.

Short papers
------------

In addition to the above two tracks, there will be a separate category for short papers, describing theoretical or applied contributions of shorter length. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference.

Submission format
-----------------

All submissions must be formatted using the appropriate LaTeX style file, either gd-llncs.cls for long papers or gd-llncs-short.cls for short papers; these are derived from the style file used for the conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed. Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without consideration of their merits.

To promote inclusion of figures in the submitted papers, submissions will have a strict number of lines limit. Regular papers must have at most 400 lines, (excluding references and figures) and at most 14 pages (excluding references). Short papers must have at most 225 lines (excluding references and figures) and at most 7 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the page limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion.

All submissions will be handled through EasyChair at the web site https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd2021

Posters & Contest
-----------------

Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to 2 pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster itself.

Details about the traditional Graph Drawing Contest held at the conference are provided on the conference web site https://algo.inf.uni-tuebingen.de/gd2021/index.php?id=contest.

PUBLICATION
-----------

All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The LNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and openly accessible to anyone after four years.

Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv repository, in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of the LNCS proceedings version (identical, except for possibly changed references to the appendix resp. the arXiv version) plus an optional clearly marked appendix. This appendix could contain a long version of the entire paper or proofs that have been omitted from the main text. Subsequent submissions of revised versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv "replacements") are allowed. Upon submission of the camera-ready version of an accepted paper, the authors will be required to specify the arXiv identifier associated with the paper for inclusion in a conference index, which will be also published in the arXiv repository. Failure to comply with these guidelines will impede the publication of the paper.

Each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author (barring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the paper will not be included in the proceedings.

Selected papers from both tracks will be invited for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA). The authors of two selected papers in Track 2 will be invited to submit a substantially extended and enhanced version of their work to IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). A TVCG papers session at the Graph Drawing conference will also feature regular TVCG papers.

AWARDS
------

For each of the two tracks, the Program Committee of GD2021 will give a Best Paper Award. In addition, to recognize the effort of participants to present their work and to prepare their posters in a clear and elegant way, there will be a Best Presentation Award and a Best Poster Award voted on by the GD2021 attendees.

VISSOFT 2021: 9th IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization

The conference will be fully virtual!

== Call for Papers ==

Conference website: https://vissoft.info/2021/

Software visualization is a broad research area whose general goal is to enhance and promote the theory, realization, and evaluation of approaches to visually encode and analyze software systems, including software development practices, evolution, structure, and software runtime behavior. Software visualization is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on theories and techniques from areas such as information visualization, human-computer interaction, computer graphics, and data science, and applying these in the software engineering domain.

The VISSOFT conference is principally a venue for publishing and discussing research related to software visualization. Consequently, VISSOFT brings together a community of researchers from software engineering, information visualization, human-computer interaction, computer graphics, and data science to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization.

This year’s VISSOFT, co-held with ICSME, encourages a variety of submissions that address outstanding challenges in software systems using visualization. This includes technical papers, evaluations, applications/design studies, systems and formalisms, and papers that present novel ideas and tools.

=== Topics of interest include: ===

- Innovative visualization and visual analytics techniques for analysis of software engineering data. This includes source code, dependencies, repositories, developer social networks like StackOverflow and GitHub, mobile app reviews, documentation, runtime logs, and DevOps data

- Visualization to support software development activities, including design, requirements engineering, software maintenance, program comprehension, software performance, software testing, and debugging

- Interaction techniques and algorithms for software visualization

- Visualization-based techniques in software engineering education

- Integration of software visualization tools with development environments

- Empirical evaluation of software visualizations, including eye-tracking

- Industrial experience with using software visualization

- Applications of new technologies to enhance software visualization, including virtual reality, augmented reality, gamification, and machine learning

- Analytical approaches to understand software-related aspects based on data science concepts

We solicit papers that present original, unpublished research results. Papers will be rigorously reviewed by an international program committee. In addition to technical papers, VISSOFT features a New Ideas and Emerging Results and Tool Demo (NIER/TD) track. All accepted submissions will appear in the conference proceedings and the IEEE Digital Library.

== Submission Types ==

=== Technical papers: ===

A technical paper contribution must describe an in-depth and mature research result relevant to software visualization. The content of a technical paper can be at a maximum 10 pages long (including all figures, tables, and appendices). However, the 10 page limit does not include the bibliography, which is limited by two additional pages.

The submission of a video (up to 5 minutes in length) to accompany the paper is highly encouraged to show interaction possibilities. Authors who wish to submit a video can submit the video together with their paper if the size of the video is smaller than 50 MB, alternatively a URL to the video could be provided.

Authors of technical papers that do not receive an acceptance recommendation from reviewers can, eventually, be invited to adapt the paper and make it acceptable for the NIER/TD track.

Awards: VISSOFT 2021 will award best technical papers.

Special issue: A selection of best papers will be invited to submit extended versions for tentative publication in a Special Section of the journal of Information and Software Technology published by Elsevier http://www.elsevier.com/locate/infsof

Artifact evaluation: Paper authors are encouraged to submit research artifacts (e.g., tools, data repositories, frameworks, videos) to the artifact evaluation track of ICSME. Please find further details in https://icsme2021.github.io/

==== Important Dates: ====

Paper Abstract: June 11, 2021
Paper Submission: June 18, 2021
Notification: July 23, 2021
Camera-Ready: August 6, 2021
Conference: September 27-28, 2021

Submission link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vissoft2021

=== NIER/TD Track: ===

The NIER/TD Track of VISSOFT accepts two types of contributions: NIER (New Ideas and Emerging Results) and Tool Demonstrations (TD). Both NIER and TD contributions have a page limit of 5 (including bibliography).

NIER contributions describe work-in-progress and preliminary exciting results. Authors are encouraged to include open questions and even provocative hypotheses to get early feedback on their research ideas. A sound evaluation is not required for NIER contributions. One of the goals of the NIER Track is to foster collaboration among different research groups.

Tool Demonstrations (TD) describe the design or actual utilization of software visualization tools, with a focus on the architecture of the tool or its use to gain new insights. During the conference, we will organize an informal tool demonstration session where authors of TD papers are invited to demonstrate their tools. The submission may also contain a link to a screencast (e.g., YouTube or Vimeo) to show the interaction possibilities offered by the tool.

==== Important Dates: ====

Paper Abstract: June 11, 2021
Paper Submission: June 18, 2021
Notification: July 23, 2021
Camera-Ready: August 6, 2021

Submission link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vissoft2021

=== Journal First Track ===

A submission to the VISSOFT 2021 call for journal-first paper presentations must adhere to the following criteria:

- The paper was accepted to a relevant journal and it is in the scope of the conference

- The paper was published between June 1, 2018 and June 10, 2021:

- The paper reports new research results and/or presents novel contributions that significantly extend, and were not previously reported in, prior work

- The paper has not been presented at, and is not under consideration for, journal-first programs of other conferences

Authors of a paper that meets these criteria are invited to submit a one-page presentation proposal consisting of the paper’s title, the paper’s authors, a short statement on how the work satisfies the journal first criteria, and a pointer to the original journal paper at the journal’s Web site. If the paper is not online yet, then specify so. The original paper should also be uploaded during submission.

If a submission is accepted for the journal-first program, at least one author of the associated journal paper must register and present the paper at the conference. The journal-first manuscripts are published through the journals and will not be part of the Conference proceedings. The journal-first papers will be listed in the conference program. Journal first presentations will have the same presentation time than technical papers.
Graph Drawing and Network Visualization

September 14-17, 2021 - Tuebingen, Germany
https://algo.inf.uni-tuebingen.de/gd2021/

================================================================

PDF version: https://algo.inf.uni-tuebingen.de/gd2021/data/uploads/cfp-gd2021.pdf

================================================================

* Geometric computing

== INFORMATION+ 2021 ==

=== Interdisciplinary practices in information design & visualization ===

=== ONLINE: 27 September - 1 October 2021 ===

=== CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ===

==== ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ====

==== FORMATS FOR PROPOSALS ====

''15-minute paper presentation'': Submit a long abstract (1000 words) with one descriptive figure and 3 keywords.

''5-minute lightning talk'': Submit a short abstract (500 words) with one descriptive figure and 3 keywords.

==== IMPORTANT DATES ====

* 15 May 2021 Deadline for submissions
* 20 July 2021 Notification of acceptance
* 30 July 2021 Confirmation by authors
* 27 Sep – 2 Oct 2021 Conference

==== EVALUATION CRITERIA ====

ACM IUI 2021 CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS (deadline extended)

In conjunction with the 26th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2021) College Station, TX, USA April 13 - 17, 2021 http://iui.acm.org/

IUI 2021 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the workshops is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Workshops will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any of the conference topics (or related). This year we are particularly interested in workshops that have an interactive aspect.

Preference will be given to workshops with interactive and hands-on sessions where participants can team up or work together towards the common goal of the workshop. We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops, including but not limited to:

- "Mini-conferences" on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes.
- "Late breaking work" meetings; such workshops usually have a lighter review process (e.g. based on abstracts only).
- "Hands-on" workshops around a specific problem or topic that may wish to ask participants to submit a position statement.
- "Mini-competitions", challenges, or hackathons around selected topics with individual or team participation.

== PROPOSAL FORMAT ==

Note: One of the keys to a successful workshop submission is to CONTACT THE CHAIRS WITH YOUR IDEAS (workshops2021@iui.acm.org), and work together to prepare an exciting proposal!

Workshop proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the standard sigconf format, using one of the Interim ACM templates available at http://www.acm.org/publications/article-templates/proceedings-template.html

Please submit your proposal via the PCS 2.0 submission system (https://new.precisionconference.com).

The proposals should be organized as follows:
- Name and title: A one-word workshop acronym and a full title.
- Description of workshop topic and goal: This description should discuss the relevance of the suggested topic to the IUI audience. Include a brief discussion of why and for which audience the workshop is of particular interest.
- Organizers: Names, affiliations, emails, and web pages of the workshop organizers. This can be a single person or a group of people. Strong proposals normally include organizers who bring differing perspectives on the topic and are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. Please indicate the primary contact person and the organizers who plan to attend the workshop.
- Previous history: List of previous workshops that were held on the topic including the conferences that hosted past workshops and the number of participants. Also please provide the list of other workshops organized by workshop organizers in the past.
- Workshop program committee: Names and affiliation of the members of the
(tentative) workshop program committee that will evaluate the workshop submissions.
- Participants: A statement saying how many participants you expect and how you plan to invite participants for the workshop. We recommend the proposal to include the names of at least 10 people who have expressed interest to participate in, or contribute a paper to, the workshop.
- Workshop format: A brief description of the workshop format regarding the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, demonstrations, and general discussion.
- Length: Full-day or half-day.
- Proposal format: Workshop proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the formatting instructions from (sigconf):
http://www.acm.org/publications/article-templates/proceedings-template.html

Additional guidelines:
----------------------

- Workshop proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the workshop chairs.
- Organizers: We strongly encourage all of the workshop organizers to attend IUI and take part in their workshop. This can make the workshops more appealing for the participants and strengthen the discussion part.
- Workshop summary: An extended abstract with a summary of the workshop goals and an overview of the workshop topics will be included in the ACM Digital Library for IUI 2021.
- Workshop proceedings: At the convenience of the workshop organizers, we will arrange a joint volume of online proceedings for the workshop papers.
Workshops should request the authors to submit papers in the ACM SIGCHI Paper Format.
- Cancellation: Workshops with few submissions by January 3 2021 may be cancelled, shortened, merged with other workshops, or otherwise restructured. This will be done in consultation between the IUI 2021 workshop chairs and the workshop organizers.

Additionally, we strongly encourage to have workshop organizers from different institutions and research communities, bringing different perspectives to the workshop topic. We welcome workshops with a creative structure that attracts various types of contributions and ensures rich interactions.

The organizers of accepted workshops are responsible for producing a call for participation and publicizing it, such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the IUI conference community. Workshop organizers will maintain their own website with updated information about the workshops and the IUI 2021 web site will refer to the workshop site.
The workshop organizers will coordinate the paper solicitation, collection, and review process, and coordinate the production of the joint online proceedings with IUI 2021 workshop chairs.
